Piedigrotta is an exhilarating september festival rich in art, theatre, cinema, traditions and music, awaited with great anticipation. This year edition of the Festival (3-13 september), pays homage to the Futurism movement. The Royal Palace has been chosen as special venue to celebrate the centenary of the first Founding and Manifesto of Futurism. From the 3rd of September the Royal Palace's magnificent rooms will welcome visitors for the exhibition on Futurism, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva.
The coming edition will also see the presence of John Turturro who is shooting his film “Neapolitan Songs”. This pleasant coincidence is catching the attention of the public as well as of the media all over the world. The surreal eye of a director-actor melts tradition and contemporary praising how the coexistance of both of them has shaping Naples, its melodies and their glocal essence, an harmonic fusion of Neapolitan as well as International elements.
Take part to the Festival means discover colourful and joyful Naples proud of its traditions through the several guided visits arranged on this occasion.
In this year edition the tradition focuses on the myth of the Crypta Neapolitana excavated in just one night by the poet Virgil helped by some extraordinary individuals, according to the legend. It's a 700mt gallery excavated in the tufa rock during the Roman Empire with the aim of a faster and easy connection between Naples and the Phlegrean area.
Another moving moment will be the religious procession that will see the Virgin Mary parades along the picturesque and crowded streets of the city, accompained by the onlookers that will gather to assist to the celebration held by the Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe.
On september the 5th bright lights will sparkle over the sea as the fireworks will spread like huge colourful flowers on the Bay of Naples.
The auditions will be held at Sannazzaro theatre on 6th and 7th of August with a live performance of the proposed song. The finalists will perform at Rotonda Diaz, as usual.
The hottest event of the festival will be the concert of the international star Elton John, on September 11 in Piazza Plebiscito. For the first time the artist has chosen to perform in an Italian town square.
We will be delighted to welcome him after being away for 36 years.
